COTABATO CITY — A 12-year-old girl was killed in a grenade explosion in the village of Labangal in General Santos City on Aug. 20, police said.

Investigators said the victim, identified as Angel K. Malid, had found the fragmentation grenade and accidentally pulled its safety pin, causing it to explode.

Major Miguel D. Angelo, chief of the Makar Police Station, told reporters on Thursday that the out-of-school girl helped her parents collect bottles and other recyclables to sell to junk shops. She found the grenade somewhere and brought it to their home.

Village officials confirmed the device went off in her hands. The city’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said she died instantly from shrapnel wounds. — John Felix M. Unson
